The Greek historian Thucydides wrote " the people of the Mediterranean began to emerge from barbarism when they learnt to cultivate the olive and the vine"..... It's proven that the Etruscans cultivated olive trees in Umbria in the 5th century B.C....and used olive oil for consumption, cosmetics and lamp lights...but also for trade exchanges.
The general tendency in Umbria for the past three decades is making high quality Extra Vergin Olive Oils and today the region is divided in 5 different olive oil-micro-areas under the main label DOP Umbria. Different varieties of trees produce different tastes of oil......an olive oil taste tour is a challenge !!!
From October to December the olives are picked and pressed in the mills, and you can have a taste of the freshly produced "green gold" on a slice of toasted "sciapo" bread in combination with the newly produced wine "Novello" during the event called "Frantoi Aperti" in November!!
For those of you who love sports and being in touch with the nature Umbria is an ideal place, you can choose among a wide variety of activities from hang-gliding to cycling, hiking, skiing, equestrian tourism or canoeing, rafting and kayaking along the rivers....or you can just relax in on the many spa resorts in the region.....tennis courts and golf courses are available also for professionals.....
